Chaos to Cozy Week 1: Bedrooms

simple, clean bedroom

October 5, 2023

Welcome to week 1 of the Chaos to Cozy Fall Decluttering Challenge!

simple, clean bedroom

This week, we are working on bedrooms.

I did a light declutter of our bedroom a few weeks back, and let me tell you – I had the best night of sleep that night. There really is something to be said for reducing the visual clutter and, therefore, reducing stress. Not only that, when you wake up and the first thing you see is a clean, clutter free space – you’re starting your day off on the right foot!

So, I figure, let’s start with our bedrooms so we can be getting better sleep as we go through the simplifying and decluttering process over the next few weeks.

I’ve attached a checklist of things to go through to help you get started. We each have items that may be unique to us, so it’s important to note that this is not a comprehensive list and it’s important to go through everything in your space.

A few things to note as you work through your space:

  • make separate piles for donations, recycle, toss, and resell
  • ask yourself,
    • why am I holding onto this?
    • would I buy this again?
    • do I need this for the season of life I’m in right now?
    • do I wear or use this regularly, or has it been at least a year?
      • if the item is seasonal, can I store it efficiently elsewhere?
  • make it a goal to keep flat surfaces clear, unless it truly belongs there
  • everything needs to have a home, somewhere to be put away

This may get emotional, and parts of it may be challenging – try to remember they are just things, and they do not make you YOU. Your things do not define you.

There is so much freedom on the other side of decluttering. More time to do the things you truly love to do. So take this week, and take your time to work on decluttering your bedroom. If you feel motivated, or have the extra time – go ahead and tackle the kids rooms or the guest bedroom while you’re at it. I have found that once I get on a roll, it’s hard to stop.
