A Theme for Spring

Simplify. Yep, it’s that simple! Ha 😉 Of course I’ve been doing the mandatory spring cleaning, but in the process I’ve been focusing on cleaning out the excess and allowing our home to become simple in the process. In the past, I’ve felt a need to keep up with the Jones’ and shop every new home decor drop from our favorite retailers. Yes, I get the temporary dopamine hit from buying something new – but that is short lived, and in reality it results in far too many things to keep organized.

I believe everything has energy, including our homes and the things we have in them. When my space is cluttered and feeling too full, the energy in our home starts to feel heavy. I feel bogged down, uninspired, and even anxious. I notice it amongst my family members too.

My solution? A massive purge. After many trips to donation centers and passing things on to friends and family, our home is feeling light again. And did you know, you also get a dopamine hit when you make donations?

To accomplish this, I followed advice from Shira Gill’s book, Minimalista which you can find here. It’s a work in progress still, but I’ve been going through the house room by room getting rid of duplicate items we don’t need, things we don’t use, and excess decor items I don’t love or that don’t have a home. Picking up at the end of the day (or week, because an entire family lives here, let’s be real), is so much more manageable with less.

I have been pretty ruthless in the process, and to be honest – it’s felt great. It’s like our house can breathe again. I’ve been editing my closet as well, (more to come on that in a future post) and it’s so much easier to get dressed.

One of the other benefits of simplifying our home that I’ve quickly come to realize – living with less leaves more time to do the things that bring me joy. And that in itself, makes it all worth it.

I don’t know that i’ll ever be a true minimalist, but the process of simplifying our home has been incredibly freeing. I’m telling you, a simple home is the key, at least for me, to creating a peaceful space I love to come home to.
