How To Style Greenery

February 5, 2018

I don’t know about you, but the last couple months of winter are always the hardest. It seems like it’s dark all the time, and you can almost always count on rain in the forecast for the foreseeable future. Seriously, is it Spring yet? I know Seattle is known for it’s rain – but truth be told, the other 9 months out of the year it is beautiful! Thankfully, I’ve found a simple way to refresh my home that sort of tricks my senses into forgetting what it’s like out there.

What is it you ask? FRESH FLORALS. Specifically, fresh greens. I know, so easy right? Yes! There is just something so refreshing and calming about incorporating fresh greenery into your home. Using greenery is the perfect way to use florals while we are still in that transitional period between winter and spring. Personally, I like to keep my decor consistent with the current season.

BAR STOOL, VASE

When I go to the grocery store each week, my first stop is the small floral section just inside the front door. I don’t go for anything elaborate because fresh blooms can up that grocery bill real fast. I’m talking simple. I can almost always get a beautiful bouquet of fresh greenery for $5 or less. And the beauty of buying the fresh greens – they last for a couple of weeks! If grocery store flowers aren’t your jam, you can also shop local Farmers Markets for stunning bouquets at a fraction of the cost of many grocery stores or florists. The Farmers Market in my neighborhood is only open seasonally, but you can bet I’ll be headed there all summer long for fresh blooms!

My “go to” greens all year round are the eucalyptus varieties. My favorite are the seeded eucalyptus and the silver dollar eucalyptus – they are just so versatile. They’ll last for a couple weeks and can look beautiful even when dried. Remember, you don’t have to get anything fancy, if the label on the wrapper says “filler box” or something of the sort, you’re looking at the right stuff! Usually greens are added to bouquets of fresh flowers, but they are truly beautiful on their own and make refreshing your space simple to do on a budget. If greens aren’t calling your name, I often use baby’s breath – another “filler flower.” Their simple blossoms are so dainty, and they add just the right amount of delicate beauty to any space that needs refreshing.

Once you’ve got the greens (or blooms), you’re ready for the fun part! I like to add a larger bunch to my mantle, and will clip a few smaller stems to place in small vases and jars around the house. You can be creative with this! Here are a few suggestions for places to add greenery – built-ins, kitchen shelves, bathroom counter, coffee or side tables, console table, entry way. The possibilities are endless and a little bit goes a long way. I hope you enjoy refreshing your space while we patiently wait for spring to come!
