Shop the House Room Refresh Pt. 1 – Living Room Edition

May 11, 2020

I don’t know about you, but after spending all of our time at home these last couple of months, it became clear to me pretty early on that I wanted to “finish” the spaces in our home where we were spending the most time. Because of my temporary unemployment, that meant I had to get creative with sourcing furniture and a rug for our living room if I wanted instant gratification. So what’s a girl to do with limited income and a tight budget? I shopped the house to give our living room a refresh!

Here is what the space looked like shortly after move in 3.5 years ago.

Then this, not too long after…

And here is what it looked like in February.

Living Room February 2020

As you can see, the space had already evolved so much over the course of 3 years. And that’s part of what I love about our homes – they evolve right along with us. No matter what stage we’re at, we can always make our home feel like home. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – I believe your home can always be beautiful and classically you. I can honestly tell you, I loved my home just as much in the beginning as I do now.

Okay, so here’s how it has changed over the last few weeks… First we swapped tables. We had been using the side table pictured above as a coffee table for THREE years. It has always been too small, it has always bugged me, but it served its purpose. I ended up stealing the coffee table from our family room downstairs and wow, what an improvement!

Once we moved the coffee table in here, I knew a rug was next on the list. Enter: the guest room rug – which can be seen in this post HERE. While I truly love the cream rug pictured above, this is another example of incorrect scale. The cream rug is a 5×7 and it is simply too small for this space. Ideally, you want to have the front legs of the furniture on the rug which helps anchor the space.

So here we are today with a “new” coffee table and vintage inspired rug pulled from other areas of the house.

I’ve gotten several questions about the spaces that have been robbed. While yes, the guest room has pretty much been scrapped for parts (more on that later this week), and the family room is lacking a coffee table, I feel so much more at peace in here.

If you follow me over on INSTAGRAM, then you know that Casey calls this area my “zen zone.” I have been making an effort to be seated right here in this spot by 6AM every morning to enjoy a little quiet and me time before the hustle and bustle of the day at home begins.

As for the other spaces, well, we aren’t having any overnight guests anytime soon. But even still, I’m on the hunt for a rug that I might like just a little bit better for the living room, so this one can go back to its rightful home. And later this year, we hope to finish up the family room downstairs – but that will come once the bathroom renovation is complete!

Katie
